Saint John’s and Wisconsin-Whitewater, two of Division III’s top football programs, have agreed to play a home-and-home series starting in 2022.
The two teams are highly ranked in the 2021 College Football America Division III Preseason Top 30, with the UW-Whitewater Warhawks coming in at No. 4 and the Saint John’s Johnnies coming in at No. 6.
In 2022, SJU will host UWW at 1 p.m. on Sept. 10, 2022. SJU then returns the favor, traveling to UWW on Sept. 9, 2023.
The game will be a rematch of the pair’s 2019 national semifinal game at Clemens Stadium, where the Warhawks defeated the Johnnies, 35-32, to advance to the national championship game. The Warhawks lost to North Central the next week, 41-14.
This game will also pit two programs that are among the winningest in Division III football since 1990. UWW has won 294 games, while SJU has won 2929. Only Mount Union (401) has won more.
The Warhawks are 4-1 all-tie against Saint John’s.
“We are excited to announce that we will be adding UW-Whitewater to our schedule starting in 2022,” Saint John’s head coach Gary Fasching said via a release. “Coach (Kevin) Bullis and his staff have continued the incredible success of his predecessors at Whitewater. To have two, top-5 programs squaring off in week two in 2022 and 2023 will be exciting for both teams and their fans.”
