The Hardin-Simmons Cowboys took care of business against the Wayland Baptist Pioneers, winning 49-0 on Sept. 4 in Abilene, Texas.
Chuck Cox of the College Football America Yearbook staff covered the game. His photo gallery is on our Facebook page and photos of the game could end up in the 2022 edition of the Yearbook. Hardin-Simmons (1-0) easily handled the Pioneers (0-1), taking a 35-0 lead by halftime. That gave the Cowboys the opportunity to play many second- and third-string players.
Hardin-Simmons racked up 568 yards in total offense against the NAIA opponent, with quarterback Kyle Jones passing for 316 yards and five touchdowns. Kai Brinkerhoff had 73 yards receiving and was one of 15 different Cowboys to catch a pass. Myles Featherston had 49 yards rushing. Cade Michna and Matt Mitchell had six tackles each for the Cowboys.
While WP lost, they did put some solid offensive numbers.
Quarterback Nick Quintero threw for 223 yards, while Skyler Whitten caught eight passes for 100 yards. Defensively, Andrew Villa had 10 tackles and an interception.
The Cowboys open American Southwest Conference play this Saturday against Sul Ross State. The Pioneers open Sooner Athletic Conference action on Saturday against Lyon.
