The Montana Grizzles moved from No. 9 to No. 5 in the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 Poll after the Grizzlies defeated the Washington Grizzlies on Saturday.
Montana’s win was just the sixth FCS win over a ranked FBS opponent since 1983. The Grizzlies also received a first-place vote.
Sam Houston remained No. 1, getting 23 first-place votes. James Madison was No. 2, with one first-place vote, South Dakota State was No. 3 with three first-place votes and North Dakota State was No. 4.
Delaware dropped out of the Top 5, despite winning, falling to No. 6. North Dakota (No. 7), Eastern Washington (No. 8), Southern Illinois (No. 9) and Weber State (No. 10) rounded out the Top 10.
The rest of the Top 25 included No. 11 Villanova, No. 12 UC Davis, No. 13 Montana State, No. 14 Southeastern Louisiana, No. 15 Northern Iowa, No. 16 Central Arkansas, No. 17 Jacksonville State, No. 18 Austin Peay, No. 19 East Tennessee, No. 20 VMI, No. 21 Monmouth (NJ), No. 22 Richmond, No. 23 Kennesaw State, No. 24 Chattanooga and No. 25 Missouri State.
Nicholls and North Carolina A&M dropped out of the Top 25.
There were four other FCS teams that beat FBS opponents last week — Eastern Washington (def. UNLV), UC Davis (def. Tulsa), East Tennessee (def. Vanderbilt) and Holy Cross (def. UConn).
