Coaches Poll Week 6: Penn State, Iowa Slide Up Ahead of Showdown

The Iowa Hawkeyes and the Penn State Nittany Lions eached move up two spots to No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the USA Today Coaches Top 25, which was released on Sunday.  

The Hawkeyes (5-0) and the Nittany Lions (5-0) are undefeated entering their huge Big Ten showdown on Saturday. The pair are two of three Big Ten teams in the Top 10. Michigan, also undefeated, is No. 9.

Alabama remained No. 1 after taking care of Ole Miss, while Georgia remained No. 2 after beating Arkansas. Alabama received 63 of the 65 first-place votes.  

After the Top 4, Oklahoma was No. 5, Cincinnati — which beat Notre Dame in a matchup of top 10 teams — was No. 6, Ohio State was No. 7, Michigan was No. 8, Oregon was No. 9 and BYU was No. 10. Oregon lost to Stanford in overtime to fall out of the Top 3.

The rest of the USA Today Coaches Top 25 included No. 11 Michigan State, No. 12 Oklahoma State, No. 13 Notre Dame, No. 14 Kentucky, No. 15 Coastal Carolina, No. 16 Arkansas, No. 17 Ole MIss, No. 18 Florida, No. 19 Auburn, No. 20 Wake Forest, No. 21 Clemson, No. 22 NC State, No. 23 Texas, No. 24 SMU and No. 25 Arizona State.

No. 13 Texas A&M; No. 20 UCLA; No. 21 Fresno State; No. 24 Baylor dropped out of the poll.

Teams also receiving votes included Texas A&M 105; San Diego State 103; Baylor 40; Pittsburgh 34; Oregon State 27; Iowa State 27; Virginia Tech 24; Boston College 14; Texas-San Antonio 13; Appalachian State 11; Fresno State 8; Liberty 7; Mississippi State 6; North Carolina 5; Maryland 5; Western Michigan 2; Texas Tech 2; UL Lafayette 1; Nevada 1.
