The William & Mary Tribe shook up the FCS polls by upsetting Villanova and moving to No. 23 in the AFCA FCS Coaches’ Top 25 Poll that was released after the games on Oct. 30.
The Tribe had not been ranked this year, but faced off when then-No. 4 Villanova and, on the strength of four interceptions, upset the Wildcats, 31-18. That loss sent the Wildcats tumbling down to No. 13 in the poll.
That wasn’t the only shake-up either. Three of the five members of the Top 5 are new this week after Southern Illinois fell to Northern Iowa.
Sam Houston State remained No. 1 in the poll, receiving all of the 27 first-place votes.
After Sam Houston, the Top 10 featured No. 2 North Dakota State, No. 3 James Madison, No. 4 Montana State, No. 5 Eastern Washington, No. 6 Southeastern Louisiana, No. 7 UC Davis, No. 8 Kennesaw State, No. 9 Southern Illinois and No. 10 Montana.
The rest of the Top 25 included No. 11 UT Martin, No. 12 South Dakota State, No. 13 Villanova, No. 14 East Tennessee, No. 15 Northern Iowa, No. 16 Princeton, No. 17 Jackson State, No. 18 VMI, No. 19 Eastern Kentucky, No. 20 Missouri State, No. 21 South Dakota, No. 22 Sacramento State, No. 23 William & Mary, No. 24 Weber State and No. 25 Chattanooga.
